Lisa Jones explores the notion of drawing as an act of thinking and doing and her drawings are inhabited by place, moment and memory. Place is revealed through erasure, observation and mapping; moment bears witness to the human presence through the bodily movements that create the marks and memory is represented through the erasure of the marks reflecting the dissolving of time and place – forgotten places and times.
The drawings have a starting point in her personal collection of photographs of paving cracks, maps and anatomical illustrations and is a continuation of her research into the relationship between the body and place. The drawing series are a palimpsest of everyday of meanderings; they are cultural markers of place, time and history.

Graphite on paper 2016 125x125cm The Residual series is a palimpsest of everyday meanderings. In an era of GPS, sat-nav and Google Maps, we increasingly take prescribed routes to places and rarely walk for the sake of the journey itself. For Jones, walking in the city is an opportunity to explore the built environment and find traces within it of forgotten, overlooked or marginalised aspects of the city. Similarly, the process of drawing is a way in which Jones investigates place and memory.
